Even in the darkest times, there are glimmers.
This mantra has been running through my mind all month. Because, whew, y’all — it’s bleak out there. It’s hard to wrap my head around what’s happening in the U.S., to process the sheer cruelty and chaos we’re witnessing. I’m struggling to find my footing, to figure out the next right step, to determine what actions I can take to make things better.1
I’ve been doing some small but important things: contacting my representatives, checking in on friends who are having a hard time, cancelling accounts and subscriptions that don’t align with my values, making lunches for unhoused neighbors, and taking a mindful approach to my news consumption. I’ve also been intentionally seeking out joy. Amid all the darkness, I’ve been laser-focused on finding the light, the good, the calm. It feels instinctual — like a voice inside of me is saying, Take care of yourself. The road ahead is a long one.
