My friend and former colleague, Kat Kinsman, inspired Tuesday’s essay about the COVID-19 death toll. On August 7, her mother died in the COVID unit of the nursing home where she lived. Kat had to say goodbye to her mom via FaceTime; a week later, she connected with her dad and sister the same way to watch as her mother’s ashes were interred.
